Improving organizations to take advantage of ICT, and improving ICT for organizations: that is what business informatics is about.
The master business informatics (MBI) programme in Utrecht builds upon your knowledge of information and computer science,
and addresses the leading issues on the cross road of business and ICT.
The starting point is that understanding the impact of IT for every organisation requires both a technological and organizational perspective.
Therefore, the MBI at Utrecht University is organised as an interdisciplinary initiative, bridging ’the hard and soft sides of IT’.
It contains four graduation profiles:
The Business Informatics program is comprised of a two year curriculum at Utrecht University. The program has international orientation and leads to a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Information Science. Students can enter the Master's programme twice a year, i.e. in February and September. Please browse through this website and find all info about our alumni, collaboration partners, study program and admission procedure.

The ongoing development Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is challenging many aspects of today’s business and management. Although there is a impressive supply of various information systems and product software, problems remain with the development, delivery, adoption, implementations of IT solutions into usable and effective systems that truly mirror and support organizational processes. For example: how can companies gain information about new markets and business partners through e-commerce? How can product software be delivered to optimize its implementation and use, taking the alignment with the companies’ strategy, tactics and operations into account? Solving this type of problems is the core competence of our Master in Business Informatics (MBI).
Since its start in 2003, over 200 students from many different countries entered the MBI program in Utrecht. The expertise and profile of our multidisciplinary students is highly appreciated by the large number of organizations we cooperate with in thesis projects and courses. In close contact with the practice field of ICT management and consultancy, our program builds upon your intrinsic knowledge of the cross road of business and ICT. The starting point is that understanding the opportunities of ICT for organisations requires both a technological and organizational perspective. Therefore, the MBI program consists of a broad variety of courses, from finance to enterprise architecture. You can improve your specific talent and design your future career by specializing in one of the four graduation profiles:
Students can enter the Master's program twice a year, i.e. in September and February. There is no entrance exam but, as indicated in the section prerequisite knowledge, admission is dependent on the judgment of the MBI committee. As of now, there is no limit set on the number of accepted students.
In general, please follow the admission procedures at the Utrecht University Masters' web-pages for Dutch students and for international students. You will also find application forms at these locations.
Please send your applications to the addresses mentioned below.| International students : |

The MBI committee will process each application and send a formal answer to the applicant within 4 weeks after receiving the application.
The applicants should follow the application procedure that is described in Utrecht University's website for international students' admissions. For any questions or issues regarding your application, please contact the study program leader Dr Rik Bos by sending an e-mail to mbi@cs.uu.nl.
The Master’s program is intended for persons possessing one of the following degrees:
Basically, at the start of the Master's program, students should:
Bracketed acronyms (e.g. [DB]) refer to equivalent bachelor courses described in the syllabus.
The majority of the descriptions are in Dutch (new windows).
[WO][B2DMD][IMP][MSO,
B1WD][NW]
[B1OICT][OC, GWW][SMOI]
For every case of application, the Master's Degree Admissions Committee Computer &
Information Science will judge the level and applicability of the student’s curriculum
knowledge to enter the MBI program based on documents and additional information provided.
This includes comparison of the course list above with an applicant's
educational cv, inspecting which courses can be matched.
The threshold is defined at two missing courses at most: Candidates are accepted if the
maximum of 'missing courses' (no equivalent knowledge could be found) is two. If you're
such a candidate and you want to apply, please take notice of the admission procedures carefully
(see section 'admission procedure'). If you're not entirely sure, then send your
CV to the MBI study advisor for a pre-advice. We will be happy to let
you know if and what problems exist, together with possible solutions.
The student will discuss his or her
interests with the MBI student advisor. Together,
an individual
program is chosen that fits the background and ambitions of the
student. The
student is assigned a coach who will guide the student
through the program. During the
final thesis project two
staff members will supervise the student on an individual basis.
The role of the lecturer of a course or project is that of a coach, rather than
a teacher. The student is encouraged to take initiatives, and is challenged
to pose problems, propose solutions, and perform theoretical and practical analyses.
The students give presentations, write papers, do assignments, and participate
in workshops. Active acquisition of knowledge and experience, individually as
well as in groups, is central within the MBI program.
The curriculum of this Master program consists of a mandatory and an optional part.
The mandatory part consists of:
The optional part consists of courses that enable students to put ’individual accents’. If you have no deficiency courses to follows, these are six courses in total, otherwise it is six minus your one or two deficiency courses. The optional courses are to be selected by the student. At least two optional courses however, should be taken from the list Optional courses .
In addition, the courses provided by other information science masters (CKE) or computing science masters (ST, GMT etc.) can be chosen without any restriction (note however that some require specific prerequisite knowledge). Students from other universities or schools are allowed to include a maximum of two bachelor courses at level 3 in their study plan. Courses from other UU faculties/schools, Dutch universities or non-Dutch universities need to be approved by the study advisor c.q. programme coordinator. By exemption, individual courses (’Capita Selecta’) can be defined. For an overview of all optional courses, see the section Optional courses.
If you enter the program from another university or school, a maximum of two deficiency courses can be individually assigned by the admissions committee depending on your educational background. For instance, if you have a bachelor in Computer Science, we assign you to take the bachelor information science course on Strategic Management and ICT. In any case, it is very important to send a copy of your diploma and course list with your application (see General info - Admission procedure).
The image below generally shows the current MBI programme. Mind that deficiency course(s) are labeled as optional courses. In principle, all course are 7.5 ECTS. A study year is divided into four periods, each containing two course slots. See www.cs.uu.n/education for more details.

Plus:
In the final thesis project the student plans and conducts his own research under the supervision of one of the staff members and an external coach. The thesis project contains a scientific-driven study on a relevant Business Informatics topic. The project can be performed internally as part of the staff members’ research domains, and/or in collaboration with an external organization, i.e., a knowledge or IT-intensive company or one of the leading IT or consultancy firms (see our list of Affiliates). Writing the thesis as well as a publishable paper finishes the project.
All students that perform their thesis project will present their preliminary results at the MBI colloquium. This colloquium aims to organize a fruitful exchange between students in their last and individual part of the MBI program.
Under construction. More information will be added soon.
Our staff and students are cooperating with many companies and organizations. We share our knowledge with them and achieve mutual benefits from thesis projects, internships, Phd projects, fundamental and applied research, conferences, guest lectures and workshops.
The following list contains our affiliate companies so far, while a detailed table with related projects that have been conducted in cooperation with them can be found in the Projects page.
